If a hospital transfer becomes necessary, we’ll follow the thoughtful backup plan we’ve already discussed together, and whenever possible, you’ll go to your hospital of choice. I will accompany you to the hospital and remain with you during the initial transition, ensuring clear communication, continuity of care, and that you and your baby are stable and well settled.
Once you are comfortable and safely in the care of the hospital team, ongoing emotional support will transition to your doula, who can remain with you for continuous, dedicated support. This allows you to have steady, familiar care while also ensuring I remain available for other families who may need midwifery support.
If the transfer is non-emergent — such as due to fatigue or a change in needs — I will meet you at the hospital, provide a thorough handoff and report, and stay until you are settled and supported.
No matter the circumstances, transfers are handled calmly, respectfully, and with your well-being at the center. You are never left without guidance, advocacy, or support.

A good fit for care with Birthstone Midwifery is someone who is seeking a collaborative partnership throughout pregnancy, birth, and postpartum. Home birth works best when everyone involved — parents, midwife, and support team — feels comfortable, aligned, and committed to working together with trust and open communication.
Families who thrive in home birth care are typically low-risk and are willing to actively participate in supporting a healthy pregnancy and progressive labor through preparation, self-care, and informed decision-making. Just as important, they value a relationship-based model of care and feel confident in an out-of-hospital birth setting.
Every pregnancy is unique, so we take time during consultation and prenatal care to ensure home birth is a safe, appropriate, and supportive option for you and your baby.

Yes, Birthstone Midwifery does support planned VBAC (vaginal birth after cesarean) home births for families who are a good fit. Because VBAC care requires thoughtful planning, we begin with a consultation and a careful review of prior medical records to understand the circumstances of the previous cesarean and ensure home birth remains a safe option.
As part of VBAC planning, we also review scar placement and surgical history, and we follow best-practice safety guidelines, including having an additional skilled birth attendant present at the birth. For VBAC home births, the planned birth location must be within 30 minutes of a hospital, a standard we maintain to support timely access to higher-level care if ever needed.
These guidelines are in place to support safety, preparedness, and confidence, so families can approach their VBAC with clarity, support, and peace of mind.

Birthstone Midwifery currently operates as a direct-pay practice and does not bill insurance at this time. We are in the process of becoming a Medi-Cal provider and exploring contracts with plans such as Community Health and IEHP; however, these arrangements have not yet been finalized.
Many families are still able to receive partial reimbursement for home birth care. We accept Christian health share plans, and PPO insurance plans may offer out-of-network benefits. To help you understand your specific coverage and potential out-of-pocket costs, we work with a trusted medical billing specialist who can review your benefits and answer questions before you begin care.
To make care more accessible, payment plans are available, with the full balance due by 36 weeks of pregnancy. We’re happy to walk you through both billing and payment options so you can move forward with clarity and confidence.

The best time to reach out is as soon as you know you’re pregnant. As a small, relationship-based midwifery practice, Birthstone Midwifery intentionally supports a limited number of families each month to ensure personalized, attentive care.
If midwifery care and home birth are something you’re considering, I recommend scheduling your free consultation sooner rather than later. This gives us time to connect, answer your questions, and make sure we’re a good fit — before availability fills.
Still have questions about home birth or midwifery care? I’m happy to help.
