Comprehensive Prenatal Care

Midwifery care with Birthstone Midwifery is a long, caring relationship that begins with the story of your body. At the start of care, we take time for a full health history, a gentle look at your nutrition, and a review of any current lab work. With your informed consent, I can order genetic screening, diabetes testing, GBS testing, and ultrasounds or exams to confirm your baby’s position.

Every visit includes both clinical care and conversation: we check in on your physical and emotional wellbeing, assess how baby is doing, and talk through education and planning so you feel steadily prepared for your homebirth.

Prenatal visits with Birthstone Midwifery are about an hour long and are typically scheduled every 4 weeks until 26 weeks, every 2 weeks from 26–36 weeks, and then weekly from 36 weeks until birth. This slower pace allows us to build trust, answer questions, and really get to know one another before your baby arrives.

Meet Your Midwife

From 37 weeks on, your midwife with Birthstone Midwifery is on-call for you day and night, available for guidance, reassurance, and support as your birthing time approaches.

When you are in active labor, I come to your home to support your labor and birth in a space that feels safe and familiar to you. My care is both holistic and evidence-based, grounded in the Midwifery Model of Care. For some families this looks like a gentle water birth, while others prefer to birth in bed, on a birth stool, or wherever their body feels best. No two births are the same, and together we find what works for you.

Once your baby is born and in your arms, I stay with you for about 3–4 hours postpartum to closely monitor your health and your baby’s transition. During this time, I:

  • Perform a complete newborn exam

  • Support breastfeeding/chestfeeding

  • Help you get comfortable, fed, and settled

  • Answer questions and support your early moments of bonding

My goal is for you to feel safe, cared for, and truly supported as you step into this new chapter of parenthood.

Postpartum And Pediatric Care

Our care together continues for six weeks after your baby is born. With Birthstone Midwifery, routine postpartum visits usually happen in your home on day 1, day 3, around one week, and around two weeks postpartum, with a final visit at about 5–6 weeks either in your home or at the Birthstone Midwifery office, depending on what works best for your family.

These visits include wellness checks for both you and your baby, breastfeeding/chestfeeding support, guidance as you adjust to life with a new little one, lab tests when needed, and conversations about healing, mental health, and contraception options. My goal is to make sure you feel supported, informed, and never alone in this tender season.

    Prenatal Care

Your prenatal care is the heart of our work together. These visits are where we build trust, answer your questions, and make sure you feel informed, supported, and truly heard throughout your pregnancy.

With Birthstone Midwifery, you’ll receive the full course of standard midwifery care for home birth:

Once a month until 28 weeks

Twice a month from 28–36 weeks

Weekly from 36 weeks until your baby is born

Each prenatal visit typically lasts 45–60 minutes, giving us plenty of time to discuss your health, your baby’s well-being, your birth preferences, and any emotional or practical support you need. Extra visits can always be added if something comes up or you simply need more time and reassurance.

Around 36–37 weeks, we will schedule a home visit with your birth team, so everyone can get familiar with your space, review the birth plan, and make sure you feel calm, prepared, and ready to welcome your baby at home.

    Labor & Birth

When your labor begins, Birthstone Midwifery is with you every step of the way. We’ll stay in close contact by phone or text as things progress, and together we’ll decide when it’s the right time for me to come to your home to check on you and your baby.

You are always in charge of how you labor. Whether you prefer to be in the tub, on your bed, walking, swaying, or tucked into a quiet corner, I work around your rhythms and your comfort, not the other way around.

As you move closer to birthing your baby, a trusted birth assistant (who is also a licensed midwife) will join us to help monitor you and your baby and to support the flow of your home birth.

After your baby is born, I provide immediate postpartum care right in your home, making sure both you and your baby are stable, well, and gently settled in. Birthstone Midwifery remains on call for you throughout the first six weeks postpartum, so you have ongoing support as you heal, adjust, and get to know your new little one.

    Emergency Care Plan

Even with the best preparation and support, birth has its own wisdom, and sometimes the safest place to welcome your baby ends up being the hospital instead of home. For most low-risk families planning a home birth, this is rare—but it can happen, and if it does, you are never abandoned or “left on your own.”

If a medical situation arises and a hospital transfer becomes the safer option during early labor or active labor, I will go with you and continue to support you as your home birth midwife in a doula and advocate role (as long as I am not already called to another birth). I stay with you throughout your labor in the hospital, helping you understand your options, communicate with your care team, and stay as grounded and supported as possible.

Your postpartum care with Birthstone Midwifery remains the same, even after a transfer. You will still receive in-home postpartum visits, breastfeeding support, and newborn care guidance, so that you and your baby continue to experience the continuity, compassion, and holistic midwifery care you planned from the very beginning.

    Postpartum Care

In those tender early weeks, leaving the house for multiple appointments can feel overwhelming. My goal at Birthstone Midwifery is to bring as much of your postpartum care as possible to you, so you can heal, rest, and bond with your baby at home while still receiving thorough, professional support.

    Your postpartum care plan includes:

2–3 home visits in the first week after birth to check on your physical recovery, your baby’s well-being, feeding, and emotional support.

A home visit at 2 weeks postpartum to continue monitoring healing, newborn feeding, sleep, and family adjustment.

A home visit at 4 weeks postpartum to support your ongoing recovery and answer any questions that have come up as you settle into life with your baby.

A 6-week postpartum visit in the office, where we complete your final routine postpartum check, discuss long-term wellness, and wrap up your official care.

Because six weeks is still very early in the postpartum journey, you will also have access to additional, as-needed in-office postpartum visits during the first year. So when questions, challenges, or new needs arise, Birthstone Midwifery remains a steady source of support for you and your baby.
