Breastfeeding Classes — In Person & Virtual, Covered by Insurance

Breastfeeding is natural — but it is also a learned skill. A class before your baby arrives changes everything.

The families who find breastfeeding easiest are almost always the ones who prepared before their baby was born. Birthstone Midwifery offers prenatal breastfeeding classes for families in Temecula, Murrieta, Menifee, and across Riverside County — taught by a Licensed Midwife with extensive hands-on lactation experience. Classes are available in person at our Temecula office or virtually via secure video. Most major insurance plans cover breastfeeding education — including Kaiser, IEHP, Medi-Cal, Health Net, Blue Shield Promise, Anthem, Community Health Group, and UnitedHealthcare.

Why Prenatal Education Matters

The Best Time to Learn Is Before Your Baby Arrives

In the first hours and days after birth, you will be exhausted, emotional, and learning everything at once. The families who navigate early breastfeeding most successfully are the ones who built their foundation before labor began — who already understood what a good latch looks and feels like, who knew what normal newborn feeding behavior looks like, and who had already thought through how they would handle the challenges that commonly arise.

A prenatal breastfeeding class does not guarantee a perfect breastfeeding experience. What it does guarantee is that you will not be starting from zero when you are at your most vulnerable. You will walk in with knowledge, realistic expectations, and a plan.

The number one thing families wish they had done differently is take a breastfeeding class before their baby was born — not after problems appeared. One class changes the entire trajectory.

What You Will Learn

Class Topics

Our breastfeeding class covers everything you need to start feeding confidently — from the first hour after birth through the common challenges of the early weeks.

How Milk is Made

How your body produces and regulates milk supply — including the role of demand, the difference between colostrum and mature milk, and what affects production in the early weeks.

Latch & Positioning

What a deep, effective latch looks and feels like, common positioning holds, and how to troubleshoot a latch that is causing pain or poor transfer — with hands-on practice using a breast model and doll.

Newborn Feeding Behavior

How often newborns feed, hunger and satiation cues, cluster feeding, growth spurts, and how to know your baby is getting enough — including diaper output and weight gain expectations.

Common Challenges

Engorgement, nipple pain, low supply concerns, oversupply, mastitis, and plugged ducts — what causes each, how to prevent them, and what to do if they occur.

The First Hours After Birth

Why the golden hour matters for breastfeeding, how to initiate the first feed, skin-to-skin contact, and how to communicate your feeding preferences to your hospital or birth team.

Partner Support

How your support person can actively help with breastfeeding — from positioning assistance to protecting your rest and nutrition to recognizing when to encourage you to seek help.

Choose the Format That Works for Your Family

Both formats deliver the same curriculum and the same quality of instruction. Choose what fits your schedule and location.

Option One
In-Person Classes
Held at our Temecula office for families in Temecula, Murrieta, Menifee, and Southwest Riverside County. In-person sessions include hands-on practice with breast models and infant dolls — particularly valuable for positioning and latch technique. Partners are always welcome. Class size is kept small for personal attention and real conversation.
Option Two
Virtual Classes
Available to families anywhere in California via secure video. The full curriculum is covered, including live demonstration, Q&A, and partner guidance. Families with demanding schedules, those outside our local area, or those who simply prefer home learning find virtual classes just as effective. Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

When should I take a breastfeeding class?

Between 32 and 36 weeks is ideal — close enough to birth that the information stays fresh, but early enough to ask questions and prepare thoughtfully. We can accommodate earlier enrollment and welcome second and third-time parents who want a refresher.

I've breastfed before. Do I still need a class?

Many experienced parents find a refresher class valuable — especially if a previous breastfeeding experience was difficult or ended earlier than hoped. Each baby and each experience is different. A class also gives you the opportunity to ask specific questions about challenges you encountered before.

Does my partner need to attend?

Partners are warmly welcomed and we encourage attendance. A partner who understands breastfeeding basics — what normal looks like, how to help with positioning, when to encourage and when to refer — is one of the most powerful factors in breastfeeding success.

What if I end up not being able to breastfeed?

The class covers all infant feeding options — breastfeeding, pumping, and formula — without judgment. Our goal is informed, confident feeding, whatever form that takes. If challenges arise after birth, breastfeeding support visits are available as a follow-on service.

Is the class covered by insurance?

Breastfeeding education is covered by most of the plans we accept. Verify your benefits here before enrolling to confirm your specific coverage.
