Postpartum & Newborn Education — In Person & Virtual, Covered by Insurance

The days after birth are full of firsts. Walk into them with knowledge, not anxiety.

Most childbirth preparation focuses on labor and birth — and then the baby arrives and the real questions begin. How do I swaddle? Is this normal? When do I call someone? Birthstone Midwifery offers comprehensive postpartum and newborn education for families in Temecula, Murrieta, Menifee, and Riverside County — taught by a Licensed Midwife who understands both sides of birth. Classes are available in person or virtually, and are covered by most major insurance plans including Kaiser, IEHP, Medi-Cal, Health Net, Blue Shield Promise, Anthem, Community Health Group, and UnitedHealthcare.

Why This Education Matters

The Fourth Trimester Is the One Nobody Prepares For

There is no shortage of classes about labor. There is a genuine shortage of education about what comes next — the weeks of postpartum recovery, the steep learning curve of newborn care, the emotional weight of a completely changed life, and the practical questions that flood in from the moment you get home.

Postpartum and newborn education is not about creating perfect parents. It is about reducing the anxiety that comes from not knowing what is normal, what to expect, and what to do when something feels off. Families who prepare for the postpartum period recover more fully, seek help earlier, and report feeling far more confident in their first weeks with their newborn.

Birth preparation and postpartum preparation are equally important. One gets you through a day. The other gets you through the first year.

What You Will Learn

Class Topics

Our postpartum and newborn education class covers both the practical and the emotional dimensions of the early weeks — for the baby and for you.

Newborn Care Basics

Bathing, swaddling, diapering, cord care, nail trimming, and how to dress and handle a newborn safely — with hands-on practice using an infant doll so you are not figuring it out for the first time at home.

Safe Sleep

Current safe sleep guidelines, how to set up a safe sleep environment, understanding normal newborn sleep patterns, and how to respond to the pressure to put your baby somewhere that is not safe — with evidence, not just rules.

Reading Your Baby's Cues

What hunger cues, satiation cues, overstimulation, and early distress signals look like in a newborn — so you can respond to your baby before they reach the point of crying and you are left guessing what they need.

Your Postpartum Body

Physical recovery after vaginal and cesarean birth, what is normal in the first days and weeks, warning signs that require medical attention, postpartum nutrition, and how to protect your healing when the world is telling you to bounce back.

Postpartum Mental Health

The difference between baby blues and postpartum depression, postpartum anxiety, postpartum rage, and postpartum OCD — what each looks like, when to seek help, and how to support a partner who is struggling.

When to Call Your Provider

A clear, practical guide to what warrants a call to your midwife or pediatrician — for both the mother and the baby — so you are not spending the early weeks anxiously Googling every symptom.

In Person or Virtual

Choose the Format That Works for Your Family

Both options deliver the same comprehensive content. Many families choose to take this class after the baby arrives — and virtual makes that especially easy when leaving the house is the last thing you want to do.

Option One
In-Person Classes
Held at our Temecula office, available prenatally or in the early postpartum weeks. In-person sessions allow for hands-on newborn care practice with an infant doll and real-time Q&A. Partners and support people are encouraged to attend — this class is for the whole family, not just the birthing parent.
Option Two
Virtual Classes
Available anywhere in California via secure video — prenatally or after your baby arrives. Virtual is especially popular for postpartum sessions, when getting out of the house with a newborn is difficult. The full curriculum is covered, including live Q&A and partner participation. Insurance covers virtual classes the same as in-person sessions.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

When should I take this class — before or after birth?

Both work well. Prenatal attendance at 34 to 38 weeks gives you the best preparation. Postpartum attendance in the first two weeks is ideal if you prefer to learn when the questions are most immediate. Virtual makes postpartum attendance easy — you do not have to leave your house.

We are having a second baby. Do we need this class again?

Safe sleep guidelines change, your situation is different, and every baby is different. Many second-time parents find a refresher class valuable — especially the postpartum mental health section, which often feels more relevant the second time around. If you had a difficult postpartum experience previously, this class is particularly worth taking again.

My partner will not be at the birth. Can they still attend the class?

Yes — and we encourage it. Grandparents, close friends, or anyone who will be helping care for you and your baby in the early weeks are welcome to attend. The more people in your support network who understand newborn care and postpartum recovery, the better supported you will be.

Does the class cover postpartum depression?

Yes — postpartum mental health is covered in depth, including postpartum depression, postpartum anxiety, postpartum rage, and postpartum OCD. We discuss what each looks like, how it differs from normal baby blues, when and how to seek help, and how partners can recognize the signs and provide meaningful support.
